A Complete Guide to All “Custom Rims and Tyres” Needs

There are times when you are bored with the stock exterior of your vehicle and are looking for ways to add a dash of glamour to your ride. While most people would look at custom paint jobs and other such customizations, I’d suggest you look at the alternatives. Custom rims can be a great way of enhancing the exterior aesthetics of your ride, although, they can lend an edge to performance as well, under the right circumstances.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Rims and Tyres for Your Ride:

I’ve had my tryst with such monotonous situations and know that custom rims coupled with the right tyres can give a massive boost to your vehicle’s performance. For example, if you plan on heading out to the track, multiple times a week, you might want to consider putting on slicks on the performance alloys, as this combinations works better when you’re trying to extract the maximum juice out of the car.

On snowy conditions, I’d rather go with winter tyres as they provide superior traction on wet surfaces, helping the driver stay on the road and avoid spinning out of control. However, if you’re on all-weather tyres during winter, you might consider deflating the tyres till a certain extent to increase the surface area and get additional traction.

Personally, I prefer all-weather tyres as they offer the perfect balance between traction, performance and fuel economy. I know many people who are in the dark about reliable aftermarket auto stores here in Australia, but judging from previous experiences, I’d say Ozzy Tyres is doing a good job so far. The guys have a decent collection of rims and tyres that you can choose from, and they also have custom alloys on offer!

Beware of Duplicate Parts:

If you guys know of other reputed dealers or retailers with the same level of integrity, do share your knowledge, as my options are limited. However, before changing your stock rims and tyres with aftermarket parts, you need to get a few things straightened out. Aftermarket parts are designed keeping in mind the technical prowess of your vehicle, although, duplicate parts are just as easy to obtain, but a lot difficult to make out!

You need to be on guard while opting for an aftermarket tyre kit, as you can be fooled easily. Hence, I recommend you do a lot of reading on the Internet, or visit a few big stores if needed, before investing. Aftermarket parts also need your undivided attention when it comes to maintenance, and things can get pricier if damaged accidentally. Hence, you need to think it out before investing!

How to Take Care of the Aftermarket Rims and Tyres?

Even though most aftermarket rims and tyres have a huge lifespan, adequate care must be taken to ensure that it stays that way. For example, you need to constantly monitor the tyres for any sign of wear and tear, as regular monitoring will reduce the chances of a mishap. Similarly, while cleaning the rims, do not use a steel brush, harsh cleansing agents or polish, as they might distort the colour and finish of the alloys.

These are some of the tips to ensure that you get the right rims and tyres for your ride, and keep it that way on the long run. Drive it like you stole it!

Benefits of High Output Alternators

Most drivers are unfamiliar with the benefits of a high output alternator, but these units can be useful when maximum charging power is needed in a heavy duty or utility vehicle. These alternators are particularly useful in vehicles that must idle for prolonged periods, but need full power on demand. Where amperage requirements are higher, high output alternators can provide continual charging and power for all of a utility vehicle’s accessories. Read on for several benefits provided by Eco-Tech alternators.

No Dead-Battery Worries

If an alternator undercharges the vehicle, it’s very easy to wind up with a dead battery at the end of a shift. Battery issues happen when numerous accessories pull amperage from the alternator at the same time, if the vehicle is left idling with accessories on for a prolonged period, or if a utility vehicle is used in a high-demand environment.

High output alternators from Eco-Tech are designed to meet the demands of heavy duty users, and they can provide charge sufficient to power all of an emergency vehicle’s accessories without strain. Some of our alternators can provide up to 325A, which is more than enough power to run a utility vehicle without depleting a battery’s charge.

Off-Road and Marine Use

Off-road vehicles and boats can greatly benefit from a high output alternator. Extra lights and marine accessories can draw much more power than a conventional alternator is equipped to handle. Similarly, vehicles equipped with plows and road-clearing equipment need high output alternators because these accessories place a substantial strain on the vehicle’s electrical system.

Emergency Vehicles

Whether it’s a fire engine, police vehicle or ambulance, emergency vehicles require immense power. These vehicles must run accessories such as emergency life support systems and flashing lights, and they must frequently idle for long periods. In the past, such vehicles used conventional alternators—which required replacement quite frequently. High output alternators from Eco-Tech can handle the immense demands of emergency vehicles, and they don’t need to be replaced nearly as often.

Long Life

When a utility, off-road, marine or emergency vehicle needs a new alternator, high output units are an economical answer. These units may represent a larger initial investment, but their increased longevity makes them a worthwhile investment. Today’s high output alternators are more efficient than conventional units, and they dissipate heat evenly so the unit does not overheat. With their heavy-gauge wiring, more current gets through to the parts that need it. Heavy duty alternators make large vehicles run more efficiently, while eliminating the likelihood of undercharging.

7 Reasons Why You Should Learn How To Drive

Are you weighing up the pros and cons of learning how to drive, or wondering if you should put a child of yours through driving school? Here are some positive reasons why you should seriously consider it.

Job Prospects

If you don’t drive, you seriously limit where you can work, and what you can do. Not only do employers like to see it on your CV, but they also might require a driver’s licence. You can even take your driving skills to the next level by acquiring automotive light vehicle training. Like any employment-related qualification, it’s certainly worth having; you never know when it might become useful.

One of the main reasons why teenagers learn how to drive as soon as they can is for independence. It really does mean that you have the freedom to do things as you wish. If you rely on public transport to get you around, you will struggle to get to obscure areas and you will be limited to travel at certain times of the day.

Drive How You Want

We’ve all been in the car with friends and relatives before out of necessity, where they drove erratically, making you feel entirely uncomfortable. If you learn how to drive, it’s up to you how you travel from A to B. If you like to take things slow and steady, then that’s your prerogative. At the end of the day, driving is quite a risky business, and you don’t always want to put your life in someone else’s hands.Especially if they are a tad on the irresponsible side.

Your Music, All Of The Time

As the driver, you get to choose the music or radio station. Those are the rules. That’s almost worth learning how to drive in itself. You won’t have to listen to your sister’s screamo, or your Dad’s Tina Turner albums, anymore.

Always wanted to go travelling? It’s easy when you know how to drive. Disappear off the tourist track and experience the country at its best. You can even go on long road trips across borders; just plan out your route online. It’s extremely difficult to make the most of your travelling experience if you have to rely on public transport to get you around.

Easy ID

Perhaps a bit of a strange one, but your licence is a great form of ID, if you’re over 18 and you want to buy alcohol. It certainly beats carrying your passport around everywhere you go. If you lose that on a night out, that’s bad news!

Lifelong Skill

The great thing about learning how to drive is that, once you’ve passed, that’s it. You don’t have to worry about it anymore. You could not bother to get a car for a number of years, but as soon as you need to be able to drive, you can get on the road. Your licence doesn’t run out. You have it until you’re too old to be safe on the roads anymore. So, even if it seems expensive (£24 per lesson, on average), it’s a one-off cost.

Getting Your Car Ready for Alaska to California Car Transport

Imagine this: You’re moving and you have four cars, and only three people in your house are of legal driving age. If you can’t find a friend or family member or friend to help, you need to find an auto shipper. Here, you’ll get an overview of what to do in order to get your vehicles to your new home safely.

Locate a Shipper

There are numerous ways to find California to Alaska auto shipping. There are sites online that put customers in touch with industry pros, and customers can get shipping quotes directly on the site. Other choices include looking through local papers and telephone directories, or asking others who’ve shipped cars. If you can’t find someone local, ask about carriers or terminals where you can pick up or drop off vehicles. Before choosing a company, find out if they’re bonded and licensed with the USDOT. It’s also a good idea to check with the BBB to determine whether a company has outstanding complaints.

Calculate the Cost

To receive shipping quotes, shippers will ask questions as follows:

  • Is there a specific delivery date?
  • How many vehicles are to be shipped?
  • How far away is the destination?
  • How big is the vehicle?
  • Do you want the car delivered to your door, or to a shipping terminal?

These questions give an approximate idea of price, because fees apply to short-notice pickups and large vehicles. Ask the car transporter whether any additional charges will apply.

If you’re moving a significant distance, allow at least two weeks before pickup. The earlier you schedule with the transporter, the better your chance of getting the pickup date you want. Many transporters have an early pickup option at an additional cost, but customers should remember that dates aren’t guaranteed.

There’s no sure way to determine the length of the shipping process. If you don’t get guaranteed pickup service, you’ll get an estimated date. However, time frames can range from one to five days depending on your location and the weather. As your moving date approaches, you’ll get a closer estimate of pickup and delivery times.

You should investigate the background of your Alaska auto transport company to ensure that your car will be protected. All reliable transporters offer coverage, and they should be willing to show an insurance certificate. You can buy additional coverage if your vehicle is worth more than the company’s coverage limit, and you should keep in mind that personal belongings aren’t covered.

When hiring an auto transport company, you should ask them whether they plan to use an outside agent to transport your cars. Your auto and homeowner’s insurance policies may offer extra coverage for your vehicle and its contents, and you should know all your options before moving day arrives.

Things you didn’t know about armored vehicles

There are lots of places to find out about purchasing or even renting an armored vehicle. The truth is, though, that the most interesting things about these vehicles probably won’t be found on any company website. If you are interested in these little-known facts about armored vehicles, read on.

The first armored vehicle was designed by Leonardo da Vinci

Long before armored vehicles came in the form of tanks, famed artist and inventor da Vinci developed a vehicle that was able to give 360-degree cover by way of cannons mounted on the outside of a vehicle with a turret. The vehicle was designed to be moved by crank action, powered by humans inside the vehicle.

The wheels on the armored vehicle go round and round

In the 1920s, mob culture made cities like Chicago very dangerous places. The company we know associate with armored vehicles – Brinks – came up with a way to transport money and other valuables in this culture of rival gangs and other dangerous sorts by taking old school busses and reinforcing them with steel panels in the body and metal bars designed to protect the windows from gunfire. To add extra protection, these “souped up” school busses drove in a caravaon with a second armed vehicle, most often a Model T carrying guards armed with machine guns.

Initially, armored cars were banks on wheels

The very first armored car was developed in 1910. The Bellamore Armored Motor Bank Car was designed to basically function as a mobile banking branch and it acted as such in New York City at that time. It featured an on-board cashier, steel-encased vault and an extensive burglar alarm system.

Flat tire? No problem

Dating back to the mobster days of 1920s Chicago, it was very common practice to stop a fleeing vehicle by shooting out the tires. That could have posed a pretty serious problem for the safety of everyone on board an armored vehicle as well as the security of the cash or values it was carrying. Because of that, the tires on modern armored vehicles are developed with a reinforced plastic lining which allows the vehicle to be driven safely even if the tires are deflated for some distance. This allows for the vehicle to be brought to a secure location even if the tires are, for example, shot out by a pursuing enemy.

Safety on wheels

Today’s armored vehicles also have many other safety features. The steel body panels can deflect rifle bullets the multiple layers of bulletproof glass used to construct the windows are able to resist shattering even upon the impact of a bullet.

Additional safety features were added in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in New York City. These newer precautions are designed to limit the dangers of fuel tank explosions and the threat of bombs. Modern armored vehicles feature bomb detectors and devices that allow the fuel tank to be deactivated remotely.

Heavy metal

If an armored vehicle is carrying coins, they can weigh as much as a Chinook helicopter – or a whale! Talk about having enough weight to stick to the road!

Honda Mobilio diesel vs. Maruti Ertiga – A comparison

Big cars are in fashion nowadays, but they are difficult to get on in crowded cities. So Maruti came out with a smaller MPVcalled the Ertiga, which offers all the practicalities of a smaller car, yet looks and feels like a full blown MPV. Honda has followed the lines of Maruti by bringing in recently a new MPV named Mobilio. Will it fare well against the already successful Maruti Ertiga? That is a big question which time has to answer. Here is a detailed comparison of the two MPVs.

Maruti Ertiga is not an exceptionally designed vehicle and carries the typical van-like shape. The styling is rather bland and it looks just like an extended swift or Ritz. Mobilio on the other hand looks trendier and is visibly longer and taller than the Ertiga. It has a Brio like front and a smart rear with uniquely designed tail lights and tailgate. Honda Mobilio scores more than Ertiga in terms of looks and style.

Both Ertiga and Mobilio are seven seater MPVs with a three row seat configuration. In both the cars, entry to the third row is only from the second row. But getting into the third row is easier in the Mobilio as its second row seats have a simpler tumble-type fall, which on the Ertigarequires you to slide and recline the seats all the way forward. Being longer, Mobilio gets more legroom for the second and third rows than the Ertiga. But then, Ertiga’s seats are more cushioned and comfortable than the newcomer’s. And the dashboard layout looks more upmarket in Ertiga than Mobilio’s patchy faux wood trimmed dash.

Mobilio’s 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine producesa maximum power of 100 bhp and torque figures stand at 205 Nm, while the 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine delivers even better performance with 117 bhp and 145 Nm of torque. The diesel engine promises to deliver an impressive mileage of 24.2 kmpl, while the petrol variant claims 17.44 kmpl.

The Maruti Ertiga petrol variant of a 1373 cc 1.4-litre four cylinder engine which produces maximum torque of 130 Nm and a power of 93.8 bhp. The diesel engine is a 1248 cc 1.3-litre turbo engine with DDiS which generates 88.8 bhp power and torque of 200 Nm. Ertiga provides mileage of around 16 kmpl by the petrol model and 20 kmpl by the diesel model.

Mobilio thus outsmarts Ertiga in performance and mileage figures also. But where it fails is the noise levels and ride quality. Both these are much controlled in the Ertiga.

The Mobilio costs Rs 6.49 to 11.48 lakhs, while Ertiga is much cheaper in the range of Rs 6-8 lakhs.

The Future of Tyre Performance

Tyre technology is moving fast and changing frequently to make drivers’ lives safer and for a better car performance. In 2014, Run-flat tyres have been in the news lately with huge safety benefits including the option that a driver can continue driving even after the tyre is punctured.

Not only do they reduce carbon dioxide emission s but also rein in fuel consumption because the car does not need to carry a heavy spare wheel. Here are some of the best tyre technologies that will be seen in the coming years from different manufacturers and fitters like Gilnahirk Tyres.

future tyres

1. Tall And Narrow Tyres

These types of wheels manufactured by Bridgestone are already in the market. The tyres are 19 inches in diameter making the car look sporty and help to safe energy. They cover a much greater distance and are slim enough to cut through the air efficiently because they are aerodynamic – this means that the car is don’t drawn back by drag. Bridgestone is the supplier of the new all-electric BMW i3 type of tyres.

2. Chip-In-Tyres

These models are expected in the market in 2016 from Goodyear-Dunlop. By inserting a chip into the tyre, the tyre can comfortably communicate with the rest of the car through the electronic control centre and the anti-locking brakes. The chip does not run on battery and relays information pertaining to temperature and pressure changes to better braking and controlling performance when cornering. The technology will apply to new car models first before they roll out to the market.

3. Twin Air Chamber Tyre

Another tyre type from Goodyear-Dunlop expected in the market in more than 10 years to come. The idea is to split the air chamber of the tyre into two sitting side by side. The technology allows a driver to continue driving at a lower speed if one pocket punctures. The wheel has a smaller contact surface area with the road and the air chambers are separated by a large groove that helps to reduce the weight of the tyre. The tyre is very safe and reduces fuel consumption.

4. Self-inflating Tyres

These tyres are expected in the market in 5 to 8 years time. Goodyear-Dunlop have innovated a technology called AMT that has an electronic system in the tyre to monitor and regulate air pressure. It measures the amount of air in a tyre and automatically refills it up when low.

The technology will not only help drivers to eliminate the need to pump up their tyres regularly but also reduce fuel consumption by regulating the psi. Initially, the manufacturers targeted heavy commercial vehicles but this technology is likely to extend to other types of vehicles.

5. Fossil-free Tyres

These types are expected in the market in 2015 according to Falken tyre manufacturers. The tyre replaces the traditional synthetic rubber with natural alternatives. It also replaces the carbon black with biomass-propelled carbon black. The tyre is manufactured by a special process using plant oil instead of the conventional rubber, silica and mineral oil. They are very eco-friendly. They are said to help reduce fuel consumption, have better wet grip performance and are very durable.

6. All-in-one Wheel and Tyre

Another innovation from Bridgestone and expected in the market in the next 3 to 5 years. The technology completely gets rid of air in a tyre. This saves drivers the risks of suffering punctures. This technology can however jeopardize comfort in a normal car, so the manufacturers are targeting the electric-powered single-seater city cars.

The factor of comfort has highly been considered because the wheel has springs all around with tiny spokes and a thin rubber coating. The tyre is made from, recycled materials in line with Bridgestone’s mission of being 100 percent sustainable in 50 years. This design is said to wear and tear slower than other conventional air filled tyres.

7. Soy bean Made Tyres

Goodyear-Dunlop expects to roll out this tyre in 2015. Researchers have found out that treads made from soy bean oil can last up to 10 percent longer than other regular tyres. Production of tyres using soy bean will reduce the drain on oil-related resources.

The company hopes to be sustainable by producing tyres using only recycled and natural materials. The ingredients in soy bean oils are said to be compatible with silica which is used to manufacture tyre wheels. This style of production will not only increase plant efficiency but also help the company to cut down in energy consumption.

5 of the Hottest New Supercars

If you’re an auto enthusiast with an insatiable need for speed, then you’re in the right place. In the list to follow, we’ve compiled five of the most advanced supercars to date, cars that make even the most agile of traditional sports cars look like nothing more than wind-up toys.

Take a look at five of the newest of these incredible supercars, and find out what it really means to be fast.

Ferrari LaFerrari

For years, auto enthusiasts have wondered how Ferrari would follow up the infamous Ferrari Enzo. Well, now we know the answer: it’s the blazingly fast and devastatingly gorgeous LaFerrari, brand new to the supercar scene for 2014.

Powered by a 963hp V12 engine that can slingshot the car from 0-60 in less than 3 seconds, the LaFerrari doesn’t mess around. Its body design, although contemporary, still has the drop-dead gorgeous visual elements enthusiasts are so used to seeing in Ferrari designs.

The car is amazing. There’s no doubt about it. But you’re probably wondering about the name. Seems a little strange right? Well, Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo silenced the naysayers to, saying, “…it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence.”

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider

Another Italian beauty, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider turned heads at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show with its fresh look and topless design.

With 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels milled from solid blocks of aluminum, a 237hp engine powered by 4 extra hardworking cylinders, and a top speed of roughly 155 mph, it’s hard to believe that the 4C Spider doesn’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars like many of the other supercars on the list. There’s a special place in our hearts for cars like these, the ones that can run hard yet feel like they might still be within plausible financial reach.

Despite the fact that many of us still won’t have an extra 60k lying around in the foreseeable future, we can still dream right?

Bentley Continental GT3-R

Bentley isn’t wasting any time when it comes to turning out cars that push far past the limits of their previous models. 2014 brings their fastest acceleration model to date, the Continental GT3-R.

The new GT3-R leaves previous Continental GTC models in the dust with its 580hp, 4-litre V8 engine (which also happens to be twin-turbo, by the way). In case you were wondering, that setup propels the GT3-R from 0-60mph in just 3.6 seconds.

Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley Motors CEO, doesn’t sell the new GT3-R short; that’s for sure.

“The experience of driving a Continental GT3-R is awe-inspiring,” Dürheimer said in a report by USA Today. “To be a true Bentley, the GT3-R had to be the most luxurious track-inspired Grand Tourer ever, and this car pushes our trademark combination of luxury and performance to a new level.”

McLaren P1

McLaren’s latest supercar offering, the P1, appears to be the pinnacle of the company’s efforts thus far. But riddle me this: how is one of the most beastly cars on the list also a gas-electric hybrid?

The P1’s hybrid V8 drivetrain puts out a screaming 903hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to bolt from 0-62 mph in the minuscule time of 2.8 seconds.

Sorry, hybrid haters, it looks like McLaren just put to rest for good the notion that hybrids can’t be fast.

There’s no better way to close out the list than with this unbelievable driving machine, the PaganiZondaRevolucion. The revs on this incredible vehicle sound like a rocket ship, and, to be honest, it looks pretty much like one too, especially when its bolting around the track at a top speed of 217mph.

Unfortunately, the Revolucion is likely to be the last we see of Pagani’s infamous Zonda line. Try not to worry though. With a 800hp V12 and the ability to jet from 0-60 in just 2.6 seconds, this car probably can’t be topped anyway. Get a first hand look at it in the video below:

What is a Show Plate?

A shows plates is any licence plate made in a similar style to a legal number plate but which does not meet the legal requirements for road use. Shows plates do have many legal uses however and many manufacturers of legal number plates (making, for example, replacements for damaged plates, new private plates or supplementary plates for towing) also make shows plates for sale to the general public.

The first use of shows plates is the one that gives them their name, and is for plates displayed on show models and mock cars as part of displays. These cars are often displayed with a word in place of the number plate (often the make or model of the car) and shows plates in the correct size and colours are used in place of legal number plates. Where the car is part of a stationary display it will commonly have it’s real number plates replaced by shows plates, or indeed often the car will never have been on the road and will not have been issued with real number plates yet.

Shows plates are also commonly used in the media, with shows plates being used in place of real legal number plates on cars in magazine adverts, filmed adverts, and also in film work, where either having the real number plate of the vehicle is less aesthetically pleasing, or a specific non-legal plate is needed as part of the narrative being displayed.

Then there is the next use of shows plates, which is number plate style items which are not designed to be placed on cars. These can be door plates, wall decorations or fashion items, these are often novelty items intended as gifts. They can be designed as door plates for car-mad children, with the name of the child in place of a genuine registration, or form part of car themed decor in a pub, bar or other establishment. While small novelty plate style items in popular names can often be found in gift stores, larger plates the same size as real number plates and closer in appearance can be commissioned for any name from a manufacturer of replacement or private plates.

Shows plates can also be non legal displays of a genuine licence plate, often using illegal fonts, appearance or colours for vanity plates which are designed to be displayed while off the road or decor to match a specific vehicle. These are much more common when combined with a private number plate, where a specific (but legal) designation has been chosen for a vehicle to replace the original DVLA issued registration. These are required to be in the same format as normal number plates (a123 xyz or ab12xyz) but often are chosen because the final letters are the owners initials or because the combination appears to spell a word or phrase (such as C001 CAR or B16 BOY). The shows plates version of the plates may involve 3D or holographic characters, or a different font such as script.
